(1) Produce Protects Against Arthritis
Your
morning glass of orange juice may be doing more than just helping you wake up;
it might reduce your risk of arthritis. Researchers at the University of
Manchester in England have found a possible link between consumption of
brightly-colored fruits and vegetables, such as oranges, bell peppers, pumpkins,
tangerines and papayas, and lower odds of developing inflammatory polyarthritis.
The most common subgroup of inflammatory polyarthritis is rheumatoid
arthritis... http://www.brewtonstandard.com/articles/2006/05/03/lifestyles/life04.txt
(2)
Garlic's Health Benefits Have Been Known for Centuries
...when a clove is
chopped, crushed or chewed, allicin has been shown to have powerful
antibacterial and antiviral properties, and studies have proven its
effectiveness in the prevention of cancers in laboratory animals. Other
compounds in garlic are known to possess anti-inflammatory properties... http://www.mywesttexas.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=16216940&BRD=2288&PAG=461&dept_id=475591&rfi=6
(3)
Eat More Fruits, Vegetables to Avoid Wrinkles
People who eat lots of
fruit and vegetables are likely to have fewer wrinkles, says a new study...
[which] found that people with a high concentration of antioxidants in the skin
look younger because they have fewer wrinkles... The study showed that
vegetarians had more antioxidants in their bodies than non-vegetarians. http://news.webindia123.com/news/Articles/Health/20060418/308742.html
4)
Consider the Soybean
For a little bean, it sure gets a lot of publicity!
In recent years, soy has become one of the most widely researched food
substances... Research is just beginning to unfold the relationship between
phytonutrients and health. Some of the phytonutrients found in soybeans are
isoflavones, phytates, saponins, phytosterols, and protease inhibitors. Soybeans
also exhibit antifungal, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties... http://www.seacoastonline.com/news/05142006/health/102821.htm
5)
Sneaking Veggies Into Your Daily Diet
The average American is lucky to
get two servings of vegetables a day. Nutrition experts would have us eating
five to seven helpings a day. This pretty much captures America's health
problems in a nutshell. If we ate more vegetables and fewer processed foods,
we'd lose weight, clean our arteries, balance our blood sugar, and shut down a
large number of hospitals... http://www.rd.com/content/openContent.do?contentId=15961
6)
Super Foods: Avocado
Avocados are brimming with essential nutrients,
including potassium, B-vitamins and folic acid. They also act as a so-called
nutrient booster; when eaten with other foods, avocados enable the body to
better absorb cancer-fighting nutrients... Eating avocados has been shown to
lower cholesterol levels and they are a rich source of monounsaturated fatty
acids, including oleic acid, which offers significant protection against breast
cancer. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/main.jhtml?xml=/health/2006/03/07/hsuperfood04.xml&sSheet=/health/2006/03/07/ixhright.html
7)
If Mom Eats Sprouts, It May Help Baby's Heart
Eating broccoli sprouts
while pregnant might help save your child from heart disease later in life.
That's the intriguing conclusion of a new Canadian study... Broccoli's key
antioxidant, sulforaphane glucosinolate (SGS), is up to 50 times more
concentrated in sprouts than it is in mature broccoli. http://www.usaweekend.com/06_issues/060430/060430thinksmart.html#eatsmart
8)
Bark from Birch Tree Holds Medicinal Promise
Imagine the treatment for
some cancers growing in our forests. Or powerful drugs for herpes, HIV or liver
disease. How about a natural source of biodegradable plastic, skin conditioner
or mosquito repellent? Or maybe a nontoxic pesticide or fungicide for
gardens?
Behold the birch tree, the noble Northland native that someday
might serve as a medicine chest for the world. A group of Duluth scientists is
extracting a natural chemical from birch bark that appears to hold incredible
potential for fighting diseases... http://www.bradenton.com/mld/bradenton/living/health/14538705.htm?source=rss&channel=bradenton_health

contain disease-fighting, health promoting properties, while others contain
elements that may hinder your health goals. Find out information that may
surprise you with these helpful food facts. http://www.mercola.com/nutritionplan/foodalert.htm

Shocking News for Meateaters
Remember the 1993 out break of E. coli
0157:H7 at Jack in the Box restaurants in the Pacific Northwest that sickened
700 people? The Clinton Administration told the USDA to start testing the public
meat for E. coli... Since 2000, America's agribusiness firms have donated over
140 million dollars to candidates running for Congress and the Presidency... In
return the Bush administration and the Republican majority in Congress have
worked hard to serve these private interests at the expense of public
health. http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/viewArticle.asp?articleID=8697
11)
Major Scientific Review: Eating Fish May Be Unhealthy
A major review of
the 89 best studies between 2002 and 2006-published in the March 24, 2006 issue
of the British Medical Journal-finds that there is no evidence of health
benefits from eating oily fish or taking fish oil supplements. Researchers from
nine institutions analyzed the 89 most rigorous studies that looked at the
effects of omega-3 fatty acids on various health issues. Researchers said that
they found no strong evidence that fish consumption had an effect on overall
deaths or the prevention of heart disease, cancer, or strokes... http://www.fishinghurts.com/feat-omega3.asp?int=weekly_enews
12)
Vegan Parenting Video
This pod explores the lives of several families
raising vegan children. It also dispels many myths concerning the health and
well-being of vegan children. http://www.current.tv/studio/media/2683042
13) Low
Carb Diet Health Risk Fears
Cheese was a significant part of the
patient's diet... Following a low carb diet could cause serious health
conditions, doctors in the US have warned... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4814314.stm
14)
Med Schools Failing on Nutrition Teaching
Almost 60 percent of US medical
schools do not meet recommendations for nutrition education for med students,
producing physicians - the first port of call for nutrition advice for many
consumers - who may have inadequate nutrition knowledge... many medical schools
did not offer nutrition courses. http://www.nutraingredients-usa.com/news/ng.asp?n=67000-nutrition-obesity-education
15)
As 'Organic' Goes Mainstream, Will Standards Suffer?
Advocates are
cheered by the growing appeal of organic foods. But shoppers, confused by
labels, don't always get what they think they paid for. http://csmonitor.com/2006/0517/p13s01-lifo.html
16)
Firefighters Gone Vegan? Even Austin Is Impressed
The image of big brawny
firefighters devouring platters of four-alarm chili, sizzling steaks and double
cheeseburgers is as much a part of firehouse lore as brass fire poles and heroic
Dalmatians. The team's vegan diet began after Specialist James Rae, baking sweet
potato fries here, found that he had high cholesterol. "They're dinosaurs,
they're big meat eaters," said Joseph T. Bonanno, Jr., a former New York City
firefighter and the author of "The Firehouse Grilling Cookbook" (Broadway Books,
1998). But not here. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/26/national/26vegan.html?ex=1301029200&en=2a806107c12be10b&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss
17)
Can A Vegan Diet Fuel an Athlete?
Bradley Saul... tall and lean but
strong-looking cyclist is a vegan, and a raw foodist. He promotes organic living
for athletes to ensure personal and environmental health... "I used to come out
of a race all covered in salt. I'm not like that anymore," he said. "Since I've
started this, I can say my recovery times are better. I wake up in the morning
ready for the day, and I don't need stimulants or caffeine to keep me
going." http://www.azstarnet.com/dailystar/allheadlines/128941.php
18)
Scientists Find Secret to Gas-Free Beans
Two strains of bacteria are the
key to making beans flatulence-free, Venezuelan researchers report... Smart
cooks know they can ferment beans, and make them less gas-inducing, by cooking
them in the liquor from a previous batch. http://www.elitestv.com/pub/2006/Apr/EEN444f762e1b74a.html
19)
USDA Downplays Seriousness of Mad Cow Disease Found in Alabama Cow
Mad
cow disease was recently confirmed in a cow in Alabama, according to two tests
conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Even so, the USDA seems just as
reluctant as usual to admit that U.S. herds continue to be infected with mad cow
disease... This disease is endemic in U.S. herds. It is circulating in cows
right now and there are almost certainly cows infected with mad cow disease that
are being slaughtered and used in the human food supply. I believe that people
who eat red meat today are potentially exposing themselves to mad cow disease.
America's herds are not entirely safe and mandatory testing of all cows is not
being done. In fact, mandatory testing is not even being supported by the
USDA. http://www.newstarget.com/019382.html
20) Fasting -
Back to the Future: The Rediscovery of Water-Only Fasting
Although the
notion of electing to go without food for prolonged periods of time to improve
one's health has not been something commonly considered in recent times, fasting
has a long and important history. In fact, fasting played a vitally large part
in early human survival. Fortunately, this ancient knowledge is making a
dramatic comeback and is beginning to transform the way modern healthcare
providers view their responsibilities to patients...
Physiological
Benefits of Fasting
Fasting can be thought of as a period of profound
rest, during which time your body is free to rapidly undertake a wide variety of
beneficial physiological activities, some of which are described
below:
1. Neuroadaptation... 2. Enzymatic Recalibration... 3.
Weight Loss... 4. Detoxification... 5. Insulin Resistance... 6.
Naturesis... 7. Reducing Gut Leakage... 8. Sympathectonia... http://www.healthscience.org/Articles/fasting_article.htm
21)
Sludge Recycling Sends Antiseptic Soap Ingredient To
Agriculture
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public
Health measured levels of an antibacterial hand soap ingredient, triclocarban,
as it passed through a wastewater treatment facility. They determined that
approximately 75 percent of the ingredient washed down the drain by consumers
persists during wastewater treatment and accumulates in municipal sludge, which
later is used as fertilizer for crops... More studies are underway to determine
if triclocarban, which is toxic when ingested, can migrate from sludge into
foods, thereby potentially posing a human health risk. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/04/060426183044.htm VM

22) Non-stick Pots and Pans: Are They
Safe?
During my 35 years of medical practice, I have never seen, or even
heard of, anyone becoming sick or dying from exposure to the components of the
non-stick surfaces of pots and pans. However, I have seen thousands, and heard
of hundreds of millions, of people made sick by eating grease... http://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2006nl/april/teflon.htm

Video Special: John McDougall, MD, on the Perils of Dairy Products - 1 hr 17 min

presents part of the massive research showing that, contrary to advertising,
dairy products promote a multitude of health problems including heart disease,
cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2348910096409126100&q=vegan&pr=goog-sl
24)
Veggie Car Owner (Vegan)
Colin McCullough, an independent piano tuner,
drives one of the only vegetable oil-powered automobiles in Central
Massachusetts, using used oil he gets for free from local restaurants. Born in
Boston, he attended Bonnie Eagle High School in Standish, Maine, Franklin Pierce
College in Rindge, New Hampshire, and the New England Conservatory in Boston. He
worked for Steinway & Sons in New York City before going out on his own. He
had his diesel Volkswagen Beetle converted to vegetable oil a year ago and has
been beating the pumps ever since... http://www.worcestermag.com/archives/2006/05-11-06/one_on_one.html Thanks

25) Governments Have Failed to Stop Overfishing, Study
Shows
Governments worldwide have failed to prevent overfishing in the
oceans, where a proliferation of bottom-trawling threatens to wipe out deep sea
species, conservation groups said on Friday... http://www.enn.com/today.html?id=10490
26) Some
Apes, Birds Can Think Ahead, Studies Show
Apes that remember to carry the
right tools to retrieve treats and scrub jays that hide food a second time when
they think a rival is watching prove animals can think ahead -- a trait once
believed to be uniquely human, scientists have found. http://reuters.myway.com/article/20060519/2006-05-19T024723Z_01_N18345605_RTRIDST_0_NEWS-SCIENCE-ANIMALS-DC.html
27)
Chimps, Humans Had Complicated Breakup
One of the most detailed
comparisons yet of human and chimp DNA shows that the split between the two
species was a long, messy affair that may even have featured an unusual
evolutionary version of breakup sex. http://www.thetranscript.com/headlines/ci_3837359
28)
Dolphins 'Know Each Other's Names'
Dolphins may be closer to humans than
previously realised, with new research showing they communicate by whistling out
their own "names." The evidence suggests dolphins share the human ability to
recognise themselves and other members of the same species as individuals with
separate identities. The research, on wild bottlenose dolphins, will lead to a
reassessment of their intelligence and social complexity, raising moral
questions over how they should be treated. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-2168604,00.html
29)
Is Morality A Wild Thing? Some scientists believe animals are capable of
sympathy, shame and compassion
Morality is usually seen as the exclusive
province of humans with highly developed brains. But world-famous primatologist
Frans de Waal believes primates like chimpanzees and bonobos are moral creatures
too. Ethics, he feels, is an inborn biological trait... Take the story of the
elephant who thundered menacingly into a compound of wildlife scientists in
Kenya. The staff fled in panic, except one employee who recognized the elephant
as a female he had looked after for six years. The elephant had since been
successfully integrated into a wild herd in a national park and had obviously
come by to give her caretaker a hug. She touched him gently with her trunk,
embracing him occasionally. After half an hour, she left again, trumpeting
loudly. What else can you call that but love? http://www.odemagazine.com/article.php?aID=4299

Vegetarianism and Spirituality

the theosophical bases of vegetarianism. http://www.theosophicalinstitute.org/medialibrary/viewtitle.php?titleid=3C57CAF3-FE33-45A0-A9A1-5ACDF9AF80BB&file=44563DA9-6C85-4364-966C-CA57A9BADA9B#44563DA9-6C85-4364-966C-CA57A9BADA9B Thanks

31) Take Action to Protect Whales: Sign the Petition to Stop
Whaling
For years, the Japanese government has ignored pleas from the
international community to stop whaling. The only way to stop them now is for
the US government to make it clear that Japan will face serious consequences if
it continues killing whales. But that won't happen unless we can get
compassionate Americans like you to speak out right now. We need to send a clear
message to President Bush that saving whales truly matters... http://www.stopwhaling.org/site/c.hhLTK0PDLqF/b.1544059/k.EC78/Take_Action_to_Protect_Whales_Sign_the_Petition_to_Stop_Whaling/apps/ka/ct/contactcustom.asp?msource=NDR060503002&auid=1669872&kntaw14473=BB7B3B884D8948E09A7371551E594F0B
