Grocers meet customer demand for vegan products

grocersThis page formerly identified the few local grocers that carried vegan product lines. In recent years, public interest in a plant-based diet has grown exponentially. Many more people, including celebrities and other public figures, are vegetarian or vegan. Many non-vegetarians practice “meatless Monday” or enjoy vegetarian meals when they have the opportunity.

Grocers have responded to meet customer demand, and we are happy to report that virtually all national chains and local grocery businesses carry at least some vegan product lines. While vegan products have traditionally been located in the “Health Food” aisles or freezer sections, nowadays vegan products are being integrated into the regular grocery sections alongside non-vegan products. For instance, soy milk or vegan cheeses are in the dairy section or vegan canned soups are in the soup aisle. Of course, grocers have always carried the natural, unprocessed foods that form the center of a healthy plant-based diet, including grains, beans, legumes, fruits and vegetables. These whole foods are available in fresh, dried, canned and frozen forms.

Vegan package labeling

certifiedveganVegan packaged products can be prominently labeled, but sometimes the word “vegan” is discreetly placed near the ingredient list. Note that the designation “vegetarian” does not necessarily mean “vegan” and may include dairy products like milk or cheese in standard or dried forms. Many vegan products carry the certification logo from the organization Vegan Action, shown below. This logo is a registered trademark. The logo is often fairly small compared to the package size. The image below has been enlarged. If you see this logo, you can rest assured that the product has met strict requirements and you need not read the ingredients to assure yourself that it is vegan. For a list of companies whose have products that have earned this certification, go to

Our Neighborhood Grocers

Grocers and markets have generously partnered with VegMichigan as sponsors or exhibitors at our annual tastefest and expo, VegFest. These national, state-wide and Detroit area partners have included BetterHealth Markets, Detroit’s Eastern Market, Meijer, and Whole Foods Market. Vegan product lines are available at all of these establishments.

Many independent local health food stores, or coops with retail stores, have carried vegan products for decades. Once the only source of vegan packaged foods in their community, these independents still are often the first to make new vegan products available to the public. A sampling of stores and coops is provided below. A great internet search tool for additional vegan-friendly grocers is
