SUMMARY:THE CITY THAT GROWS ITS OWN
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk on urban farming and self-provisioning cities with MIT professor and author\, Kate Brown. \nFive-thousand Parisian farmers grew vegetables for two million Parisians at the turn of the 19th century. Black residents of Washington\, DC paid down on their homes during the Great Depression by maintaining truck gardens on their urban plots. Soviet and Cuban urbanites staved off a famine in the 1990s after the collapse of Soviet agriculture by farming urban peripheries. These stories have been missed in plain site because they do not coincide with ideas of urban progress and neat categorizations dividing urban from rural. Recapturing these stories points to the efficacy of small-holder intensive farming in urban areas which produce a wealth of waste than can be recycled into nutrients. These stories also point to a history of urban commons and mutual aid societies that undermine triumphal or inevitable histories of capitalism. \nKate Brown is Professor of Science\, Technology and Society at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is the author of several prize-winning histories\, including Plutopia: Nuclear Families\, Atomic Cities\, and the Great Soviet and American Plutonium Disasters (Oxford 2013). Her latest book\, Manual for Survival: A Chernobyl Guide to the Future (Norton 2019)\, translated into nine languages. She is currently working on a history of self-provisioning cities as a way to imagine a post-carbon urban life. \nJoin us on Zoom here – https://us06web.zoom.us/j/89023327189

SUMMARY:HEALTH IS A GIFT YOU GIVE YOURSELF
DESCRIPTION:VegMichigan and the Troy Public Library bring you Health is a Gift You Give Yourself by Dr. Robert Breakey. \nOur “Standard American Diet” is largely responsible for the epidemic of chronic diseases that we are experiencing in America including obesity\, diabetes\, chronic kidney disease\, hypertension\, heart disease\, and several cancers. The good news is that we have made great progress in identifying the root causes for these chronic diseases\, and we are recognizing that all of them are largely preventable\, and many are even reversible through some straightforward lifestyle changes. By choosing whole plant-based foods that are truly health-supporting\, engaging in at least moderate exercise\, and ensuring that we sleep well\, we have the opportunity to greatly enhance our health and vitality well into our elder years. \nDr. Robert Breakey is a 5th generation graduate from the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed his Family Medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin in 1984 and has practiced Lifestyle Family Medicine in Ann Arbor since 1985. He is Chairman of the Board and Head of the Family Medicine Division for IHA – a multi-specialty medical group centered in and around Ann Arbor. \nPlease register here to receive the Zoom link – https://live-troypl.pantheonsite.io/events/gift-health-dr-robert-breakey

SUMMARY:HOW TO GET INVOLVED WITH POLICY CHANGE
DESCRIPTION:Molly Tamulevich\, Michigan State Director of the Humane Society of the United States\, will share some tips on how to get involved with policy change in order to make positive change in this world. \nSocial media can be a great tool for spreading information\, but in order to make the most effective change for animals\, we have to get out of our social media bubbles and take our thoughts and opinions to people who can make a change: representatives\, commissioners\, senators\, reporters\, and executives. In this talk\, we will discuss how you can utilize your time most efficiently to advocate for the causes that matter to you and overcome your fear of speaking up in front of people in positions of power. Whether you’re passionate about veganism\, wildlife protection\, intersectional social justice\, or just curious about how to make your voice heard\, we will cover strategies that can help you be a stronger\, more effective advocate. \nMolly Tamulevich has been an advocate for Michigan animals for more than 13 years. She received her Master’s degree from Michigan State University with a focus in Human-Animal Studies. In addition to her work with the Humane Society of the United States\, she currently serves on the board of directors of Attorneys for Animals. \nJoin us on Zoom here: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/83115092389

SUMMARY:FOOD CHOICES\, SUSTAINABILITY\, AND HEALTH CARE
DESCRIPTION:VegMichigan is excited to bring you Food Choices\, Sustainability\, and Health Care by Amanda Sweetman the Regional Director of Farming and Healthy Lifestyles for Trinity Michigan. Come learn about the impacts of what you eat on the environment and your health\, and why a hospital has a farm!  \nThe Farm at St Joe’s Hospital  <https://stjoesfarm.org/> was the first hospital-based farm in Michigan.  The 2-acre farm has 2 hoop houses\, a handicap-accessible hoop house for therapy\, community gardens\, and an outdoor classroom. While they produce about 10\,000lbs of food annually\, they are more concerned with growing a healthy community by empowering people through food\, education\, and relationships. \nAs part of their mission to create a just\, robust local food system\, the Farm has created the collaborative “Farm Share\,” a CSA\, which is offered at their Ann Arbor and Oakland campuses. Farm Share members receive boxes of seasonal fruits and vegetables from local farms on a regular basis. The program generated $150\,000 of revenue for local farms in 2020. Memberships are available for purchase on a sliding scale. Food insecure families are provided with free or reduced cost membership.  Other programs include horticultural therapy\, youth education\, staff community gardens\, and a produce to patients program. Join the Farm as a farm share member or volunteer and learn more about sustainable farming and healthy eating. Learn more from their 2020 annual report and their website. \nAmanda Sweetman has worked as a scientist\, farmer\, educator\, and chef. In 2015 she landed her dream job as the Farm Manager at the Farm at St Joe’s Hospital. It is there that Amanda found her true purpose. Her driving passion is to help people to discover and experience the holistic health benefits of personal connection to the food we eat\, the places where our food comes from\, and the community that pulls together to sustain us. She and her team work to educate and engage people of all ages around what real food is and how we can support one another as we work to make a change towards better health.  Amanda has recently transitioned to the newly created role\, Regional Director of Farming and Healthy Lifestyles for Trinity Michigan. The creation of this role shows the dedication of Trinity Michigan to supporting local farmers\, increasing food access\, and to growing a healthy community through food and relationships. \nJoin us on Zoom here – https://us06web.zoom.us/j/84223176940

SUMMARY:BUILDING A JUST FOOD SYSTEM - A TALK BY MALIK YAKINI
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to have Detroit-based activist and educator Malik Yakini talk to the VegMichigan community about building a just food system. \nThis talk will examine how racism\, class\, and geography create inequities in the food system.  The work of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network and other groups working for food justice will be highlighted. \nMalik Kenyatta Yakini is co-founder and Executive Director of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network (DBCFSN).  DBCFSN operates the seven-acre D-Town Farm and is spearheading the opening of the Detroit Food Commons in Detroit’s North End that will house the Detroit People’s Food Co-op. He serves as a board member of the co-op. Yakini views the work of DBCFSN as part of the larger movement for building power\, self-determination\, and justice. He is adamantly opposed to the systems of white supremacy\, capitalism\, and patriarchy. He has an intense interest in contributing to the development of an international food sovereignty movement that embraces Black communities in the Americas\, the Caribbean\, and Africa. He is a co-founder of the National Black Food and Justice Alliance. \nJoin us on Zoom here – https://us06web.zoom.us/j/87397700359
